Henry Reynolds, an American businessman from Grand Rapids, Michigan, saw an opportunity to create a new type of roofing material that would be more cost-effective and easier to install. In 1901, he founded the Asphalt Roofing Company and began manufacturing the first asphalt shingles. Asphalt shingles are made of a fiberglass mat that is coated with asphalt and topped with ceramic granules. The asphalt makes the shingles waterproof, while the granules
